ARCserve™ r11 New Features:
Multiplexing. This feature enables you to dramatically improve backup performance by sending multiple local or remote jobs to the same media simultaneously. This keeps the backup hardware running at its maximum capability during the entire backup process. Multiplexing also helps you back up data without impacting the server or application that is hosting that data as well as to make efficient use of tape libraries, tape drives and tape cartridges, and to restore data to a stable state within in a short time frame while shortening your backup window.
Report writer. The report writer offers the ability to create and design the content and layout of templates for later report generation. The generation of reports from these templates can be initiated manually or scheduled to occur at regular intervals. The reports can also be delivered as required. The supported formats for the reports are comma-separated value (CSV) and extensible markup language (XML). This feature is useful for administrators who need more reporting capabilities than the ones already included.
BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup for Laptops & Desktops integration. BrightStor ARCserve Backup is now fully integrated with BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops & Desktops (formerly BrightStor® Mobile Backup) to provide complete protection for mobile and desktop computers. Because of this integration, you can:
- Protect your BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops & Desktops servers using a scheduled job from BrightStor ARCserve Backup
- Make efficient use of the BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Laptops & Desktops server disk space by using BrightStor ARCserve Backup to migrate its data to backup media
Remote file system device support. You can now create file system devices that are accessible via network share using a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path. This allows you to send your backup jobs to another server or disk device across the network. The data sent through the network is encrypted to help avoid any security issues.
Windows Powered NAS and Windows Storage Server 2003 support. The default web page for managing a Windows-based NAS unit now includes an icon that, when clicked, starts the backup manager from a terminal server session to provide full backup and restore support for Windows based NAS devices.
BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup Small Business Server Edition. The new edition provides support for Microsoft Small Business Servers and includes all the necessary components to protect your small business environment. It can only be installed in Microsoft Small Business Servers and includes BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Small Business Servers, a backup agent for Microsoft SQL server, a backup agent for Microsoft Exchange Server and a backup agent for Open Files.
Three-way NDMP backup. You can now take advantage of your NAS devices by backing up a NAS device to another NAS device with a tape device attached.
Job preflight check. This feature checks for and corrects problems with jobs that are scheduled for the future, minimising job failures that are caused by security, network connection and media availability issues. You can generate preflight checks on remote servers and specify the location and the name of the log file to use.
Enhanced Lotus Notes/Domino agent. The BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup Agent for Lotus Notes/Domino contains the following enhancements:
- The agent has been redesigned to take advantage of new technological developments to deliver improved performance.
- If you perform a compaction or cause a database ID to change, a subsequent incremental backup will be converted to a full backup automatically to protect the end user.
Microsoft Exchange premium agent add-on. The new BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup Agent for Microsoft Exchange Premium Add-on provides support for document-level backup and restore, offering many benefits, including single instance storage support, a new data transfer interface to increase the efficiency of backup jobs, multi-threading, browse-level filters, backup filters, migration support to backup and restore data from different versions of Microsoft Exchange, enhanced cluster support and job continuation in case a job is interrupted.
A client agent for Mac OS X. BrightStor ARCserve Backup now supports Apple Mac OS X. Because Mac OS X is based on UNIX, the new BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup Client Agent for Mac OS X has the same features as the UNIX client agents. The following Mac OS X elements are supported:
- HFS, HFS+ and UFS file systems
- Backup and restore of the resource fork and alias of HFS and HFS+ files
- Backup and restore of Finder Get Info attributes (such as comments, stationery pad and locked) and UNIX ownership and permission
Support for VSS software snapshots. BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup Open Files Agent includes writer support for VSS applications on Windows 2003. Using VSS when you perform backups has two distinct advantages over traditional backup methods, including:
- Open files are backed up. Files that are open when a shadow copy is created appear closed on the shadow volume. Therefore, when the shadow copy data is backed up, the open files are included and are in a transactionally-safe state.
- Work flow is not interrupted. Because the data that BrightStor ARCserve Backup backs up exists on the shadow volume, work can continue on the original volume without affecting the integrity of the backup data.
Enhanced tape copy. The functionality of the tape copy command has been extended to include disk-to-tape copying of copy sessions and entire tapes. You can now take advantage of session level tape-to-tape copy and disk-to-tape copy and choose whether to overwrite existing tapes or to append to the destination.
Enhanced encryption. The current encryption algorithm has been replaced with a stronger, internationally recognised triple-DES 168-bit encryption algorithm, resulting in better data protection.
