Now you have your web site, you need to attract "surfers" to visit it.
Promotion is divided in 4 groups as follows:
Advertising (radio, TV, posters, ...)
Banner Exchange
Directory listing
Search Engine
Banner Exchange
To be trully effective, you will need a 1st class banner design. Banners with look-a-like scroll bars and buttons work best. Click-able elements but with animation as well are even better. Their usual dimension is 468x60 and the smaller size the better!
Placing the adverts at the logical exit points to a site is also important.
Directory listing
Yahoo is of course the 1# but there is also many specialist/region specific Directory WEB site in the UK like AppleGate.
Search Engine
There is a lot of search engines (1000s?) but only a dozen attracts big traffic.
The diagram belows shows the percentage of web surfers estimated to have visited
each search engine during the month.
Because a web surfer may visit more than one service, the combined totals exceed percent.
KEY: YH=Yahoo, MSN=MSN, LY=Lycos, NS=Netscape, GO=Go (Infoseek), EX=Excite,
AV=AltaVista, SP=Snap, LS=LookSmart, AJ=AskJeeves, GT=GoTo, iWon=iWon, G2N=Go2Net, DH=Direct Hit. Also use this key for charts below. See the Major Search Engines page for links to these services.
Being listed in search engines is best/cheapest way to be found when a prospective customer is looking for a product or services.
This is a quick overview about what to do and what not to do for effective listing in the search engines:
- Identify your most important keyword phrases. For example: "WAP enabled site" is more effective than "WAP".
- The title tag should be the first thing after the head statement and should say what you do, not who you are. In most search engines the title of your document carries a lot of weight, in many they are the most important part of your document.
- There is 3 main search engines to be listed in: YAHOO, then the Inktomi database (Yahoo's spill over search results, HotBot, Direct Hit, Canada, Anzwers, ...) and the Open Directory Project (AltaVista, Infoseek, Lycos, Excite, Northern Light).
- Check Out the Competition - what do they have in their "HEAD" section?
- Make a "SiteMap" Page and get it index by search engines
Here is a free service that will register you WEB site with the biggest except YAHOO and Snap. Those are directories and require human input for best category placement:
