There are a variety of security measures which you can use to secure your computers
especially Laptops during day-to-day use and protect the data should it be stolen:
- Boot Protection
:
Create a boot time password in your BIOS setting. This will prevent your computer being started without your knowledge.
Preventing access to the hard-disk by booting from a floppy disk. This can done by changing your setting in the BIOS to only boot from the HDD. The boot from the HDD would then require a login id/password to be entered.
- Access Control
:
Microsoft NT, 2000 & Unix provide access control by asking the user to enter a valid user ID and Password. Operating system like MS-Window 95, 98, ME, XP & Apple offer little if no security.
User must use password that are not obvious (e.g. god, your name, DOB, ...), must be long (14 characters) and use upper/lower cases, number and punctuation. e.g 'br5mbl9;2ppl30'
- Screen Blanking
:
Locking both the screen and the keyboard to prevent unauthorized users viewing your data after a pre-defined delay. The login id/password would then need to be re-entered to gain access.
- Folder Locking
:
Restricting access to certain folders to a reduce number of users .
- Virus
:
Your PC must be protected from unwanted program (or macro) referred to as "virus" tempering with the information or applications running on your PC.
- Firewall
:
Your PC must be protected from unwanted intrusion from "hackers" or software already installed on your PC sending information about you to 1/3rd party.
- Encryption
:
Encrypting your data into a secret code which is only accessible by an authorized user is available in MS-Word for example. Other products exist for email and file systems
